2010 Dead Sea Ultra Marathon · 9 April 2010

At Salisbury Hospice, we understand the profound impact of a progressive, life-limiting illness—not only for those diagnosed but for their families and loved ones. We offer our patients compassionate, palliative and end of life care, providing comfort, and guidance at every step.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Ten Members of 2 RTR aim to compete in the 17th Dead Sea Ultra Marathon (DSUM) which will be held on Fri 9 Apr 2010. The course follows a 50km route from the King Hussian Park in Amman, Jordan to the Amman Tourist Beach beside the Dead Sea, passing through the lowest point on earth en route. With average temperatures ranging from 15°C at the start to 25°C towards the finish, the DSUM is a considerable challenge for anyone attempting it. In recent years the popularity of the event has grown to such an extent that international athletes now compete. More information on the DSUM, including a roadmap, previous race results, schedule and photos can be found at the official website.

The Team aims to raise money for the Salisbury Hospicecare Trust which provides specialist palliative care services in the Wiltshire area - including Salisbury, Amesbury, Tidworth, Mere, Tisbury, Fordingbridge, Wilton and Whiteparish. People who benefit from the Hospice are those faced with a life threatening illness for which there is no medical cure. The majority of patients have cancer. Their over arching message is ‘putting life into days, not days into life’; the Trust is committed to raising £1,000,000 annually to maintain and develop facilities in the Salisbury Hospice, information on the charity can be found at their official web page. Various fund raising events are planned, Including: fund raising stalls in the local shopping complexes and collecting from units within the Garrison area.

At present, we in the Armed Forces have the backing of the public in some of the most demanding times we have faced in a generation. Many of the local population of Wiltshire have given generously to charities such as Help For Heroes and alike. By raising money for a local charity we hope to repay some of the generosity we have experienced by supporting the local community.
