Some of you will know that in November 2006 I underwent major surgery and had an incredibly lucky escape from lung cancer. My survival is wholly down to early diagnosis and my story is incredibly positive, yet I am in the minority for this devastating disease. Now that I am well and increasingly fit I have begun my personal campaign to raise awareness and funds for research in to prevention and early diagnosis. Lung cancer suffers from stigma, myth and negativity which makes it incredibly difficult to attract the funding needed to make a difference to survival rates. Of the 40,000+ people diagnosed each year with lung cancer, 80% will die within the first 12 months; only 7.5% will live longer than 5 years. Surprisingly, lung cancer is the biggest killer of women in the UK - it kills 3 times more women than breast cancer does - yet for every death only £117 is invested, compared to over £7,000 per breast cancer death. Your support means heaps - thank you! Lorraine x
