Rowing 30 Marathons in 30 Days for Down's Syndrome

From September 15th to October 15th the international on-line rowing community stage the Fall Rowing Challenge. Anyone can enter and the idea is to row as far as possible on a C2 indoor rowing machine.

This year I am going to row 30 half-marathons during those 30 days, all at sub 2 minute / 500 metre pace and in a single session each day - so no slow rowing or breaking it up into small sets! Each half-marathon is 21,097 metres and should take around 1 hour and 24 minutes - that is 632,910 metres and about 42 hours on the rower. I just hope I don't fall apart before the end!

The reason that I am doing this is to raise money for the Down's Syndrome Association (Charity #1061474). You can see what they get up to at www.downs-syndrome.org.uk.

Why? Good question. My little sister, Katie (she's the one in the picture with me and the rower) has Down's Syndrome - two babies are born every day in the UK with this learning disability.

Katie is a beautiful and loving young woman - she is great fun, she works and has a generally fantastic lifestyle. To be honest we sometimes joke about spending a week in Katie's world because it must be a wonderful place!

Whilst Katie will be my motivation to complete this challenge I'm not doing it directly for her benefit - I am doing for all the other people that the DSA helps that are not as lucky as Katie. Every single penny that is raised really will help the DSA to carry out their work to help those born with Down's Syndrome and their parents who need support, advice and information.

Thank you very, very, much indeed.
