Story

What:

30 days spent feeding and entertaining myself in on a budget of £30.

Why:

I frikkin’ love East London, from late-night bagels on Brick Lane and organic lunches in Broadway market, to chilling amid the cool kids in bars decked out with purposely chipped paint and ripped leather sofas. Whether you buy into shabby Shoreditch chic, or prefer some solid pie and mash in an boozer, this place is fun, stimulating and never EVER dull.

But immense popularity has seen price tags soar, hammered home recently when I got charged £6.50 for the tiniest glass of lukewarm white wine in a plastic cup, after shelling out triple that just to get through the door.

Considering is also home to some of the capital’s most poverty stricken, this steady hike in prices must surely be making many places and activities less and less accessible.

So in a little rebellion against over-priced fun, I am challenging myself to spend 30 days leading a fulfilling life, complete with balanced diet and full stomach, on the equivalent of £1-a-day. It would be great to prove that the East can show you a fine old time even with limited funds.

But even if I have the dullest month of my life, and wind up uninspired and extremely hungry, I’d like to help out one incredibly worthy local cause along the way.

I’m asking people to sponsor me £6.50 – the price of that pathetic offering of wine. All money I raise is going straight to Hackney Women’s Project: a hostel run by London-based homeless charity St Mungo’s, which supports vulnerable homeless women in .

This money will help bolster the hostel’s Welfare and Activities fund, which pays for fun and creative activities such as art and cookery, as well as going towards day trips for the 29 residents.

I’d like to raise them £1,000. I’d really appreciate your help.
