Don't be frightened by the picture (well - alright - both of them..!)  I've set my sights much lower (purely in altitude terms) this time around!  But this will be a very difficult mountain challenge - one that makes the legs burn with cramp and one with snatched sleep in a battered and cramped old minibus (but in the safe hands of our driver called 'Saxon') between Scotland-England-Wales in order to achieve the 3 peak goal in the target 24-hour period.

There must be an easier way to raise money for a good cause...?

- hey, but I'm lucky enough to even place myself up for this real challenge - which would not be everyone's idea of a 'fun run'.  This is something I've always (how does er...35 years sound..?) wanted to do and it's great to now have the opportunity to raise some cash for something which can help ANYONE at ANYTIME.  Being brutal about it - we are all just one careless accident (it could be anyone's fault) in the blink of an eye from needing and benefiting from this charity.

So... on the back of the awesome UCL Xtreme Everest medical research expedition in 2007 I've now volunteered to take part in the not-unrelated Intensive Care Foundation's Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for research into the treatment and effects of critical illness - but I need your support to make this real.

From the Intensive Care Foundation

"The Intensive Care Foundation aims to save lives by funding research into new treatments for all critically ill patients.  There are two main reasons for supporting research in this area - one to save lives as 1 in 4 people die in ICU; the other is to improve the quality of life of patients who survive intensive care.

Symptoms of survivors can include; post traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and the social and emotional problems that can result in loss of jobs, depression, stress on families. Research will help formally identify the full range of issues survivors have to deal with which will ultimately allow for early diagnosis and treatment to improve the quality of lives of the intensive care patients and their families.

In collaboration with the Intensive Care Society and its members, together with wider healthcare community, developing new products and services, the Foundation intends to lead in the delivery of higher quality patient care by researching into and contributing to evidence based best practice".
