My story
I made it!! 42 miles in 24 degrees heat – didn’t expect a heatwave in October and the run actually turned out to be 43.5 miles for Bern! What a fantastic day – I’m still buzzing and legs recovering well....I can now walk downstairs properly and only have one black toenail J I loved the whole day even though my knee gave up at mile 30 and the last 12 miles were tough - will have many happy and emotional memories and I know Bern was with us throughout the day and evening – when we left Bude 2 aeroplanes crossed and made a ‘kiss’ with the white smoke in the sky. Many highlights to the day including the fab support from everyone running & cycling with me, cheering me on, my support team, the fire brigade joining me and driving the fire engine behind me through the town, visiting the cemetery, the wine stop, hearing the cheers as I approached Elements and the welcome home reception, and the Chinese lanterns in the evening even if they didn’t quite go in the direction over the sea they were meant to!! Thanks so much for sponsoring me and for your support – really appreciate it. With the gift aid I've gone over my target – awesome amount for a great charity that really helped Bern and her family – she would be so proud so thanks again. *******
As many of you know my dear and close friend Bernadette Inniss (Bern) sadly passed away the day before I was due to run the London Marathon this year having lost a very brave battle with a really rare type of cancer – cancer of the sinuses. I ran the Marathon and Bern was with me every step of the way. In memory of my lovely friend I’ve decided to attempt my biggest challenge to date. On Sunday 2nd October I’ll be running a solo 42 mile Ultra marathon – a mile for each year of Bern’s life as her 42 birthday was just days after she passed away. I only started running 5 years ago and have never attempted more than 26 miles, that distance has always been more than enough to complete leaving me aching for days after, so this will be more than a major challenge for me!
I’ve planned a local run starting at The Castle where we used to work together and stopping at Brooks Garden Centre in Bude and Homeleigh Garden Centre in Launceston (we loved our plants), the cemetery where Bern is, a vineyard (we loved our wine!), through various local villages and finishing at Elements hotel/bistro in Bude who are kindly putting on a fundraising evening for me. The charity I’m running for was chosen by Bern – FORCE are a local Cancer Charity playing a vital role in local cancer services. Their work finances a Support and Information Centre in the grounds of the Exeter Hospital where Bern was and also finances improvement in patient care through research and the purchase of advanced equipment for the hospital. I know they really helped Bern and her family throughout her illness.
Bern was planning to do a charity walk this summer to raise funds for FORCE but sadly she didn’t make it – I really hope I can raise as much as possible for this fabulous charity that she so wanted people to support.
On the donating side – it’s totally secure on this site and your payment is sent straight to the charity – if you are a tax payer please tick the gift aid box as an extra 28% tax will be added to your donation and won’t cost you a thing – well worth doing.
