4 [legs] 3 [eggs, each. chocolate] 2 [wheels] 1 [family]...

It's actually happening; Easter weekend sees the Woodall siblings take on the West Country hills by tandem, and raising money for a worthy cause. On April 23rd, Lizzie and Max will depart Land's End with pasties stuffed in their panniers, and will climb the hills of Cornwall and Devon, finally reaching Bristol four days and 250 miles later. We have decided to raise money for Bristol charity, Lifecycle, who Lizzie volunteers for.

Two's Company is one of the many projects that Lifecycle run. The programme of tandem cycle rides caters for adults and young people, from complete beginners through to experienced riders. A typical ride has up to eight tandems, each with a sighted person at the front and a visually impaired co-rider behind. The rides are enjoyable days out, and also opportunities for people to socialise and make new friends.

The idea for the project came from local visually impaired people who told Life Cycle that they have very limited opportunities to take exercise, keep fit, or enjoy the local countryside. Several people had cycled in their youth but lost their vision in later life and therefore had to give up cycling. They were keen to recapture the pleasures of riding on two wheels, experiencing the wind in their hair, the sounds and smells of the countryside, fresh air, and the thrill of moving quickly and quietly under their own power.

Lizzie says: 'As a volunteer front rider, I have witnessed how important it is to continue these rides for people who have a visual impairment. To be able to get outside and ride a bike is such a joy, so if we can continue to make this possible for people who need a bit of extra support, then I will happily cycle many miles and curse the hills to do so!'

Big thank you to First Great Western who have kindly provided Max and I with tickets to Penzance with space for the tandem!
