Story

The Stroke Unit Appeal

My husband Albi suffered a stroke on the 22nd August 2013 and
was admitted to the Colchester General Hospital Stroke Unit. The care he received in hospital was faultless and that care has continued with daily home visits consisting of both physical and speech therapy.

I originally set this page up for one event but will continue to try and raise funds in all my future events.

Events have included a 30 mile trail race, several 24 hour races (running as far as I can in 24 hours!) ...as well as many other smaller races from 5KM to Marathon distance!

Plus of course husky/dog specific events, such as Siberian Husky Club Great Britain Rallies and BSHRA and other open rallies such as BSSF.

Every year Colchester  General Hospital treats around 600 local people who have had a stroke. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK. It is also a leading cause of severe adult disability.

The Stroke Unit has 33 beds eight of which are for hyper-acute patients the remainder are for patients requiring intensive rehabilitation. People like my husband who suffered a stroke and spent almost 2 weeks learning how to stand, walk and speak again in the hospital’s stroke therapy unit. Others may spend a lot longer in hospital, many months.

To help stroke patients regain as much independence as
possible special equipment such as wheelchairs, special electric chairs is provided. The Unit also has a landscaped garden where patients can go in warmer weather as part of their rehabilitation.

The Stroke Unit needs your help to buy specialist treatment
equipment and items to aid patients in their recovery after stroke and improve the patient experience.
