Story

From the 9th of September until the 28th of October I, as well as many others, shall be taking part in the 5 x 50 challenge. This involves either walking, jogging, running or cycling for 5km EVERY day for 50 days to raise funds for Rett Syndrome Research Trust UK.

As most of you are already aware, our daughter has Rett Syndrome and I will do everything in my power to raise money to fund the research that will set our little girl free.

If you have never heard of Rett Syndrome, you can find out more by visiting: http://www.reverserett.org.uk but in a nutshell, Rett Syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects mainly girls. Girls appear to be completely healthy when they are born and it is not until somewhere between 6-36 months that anything becomes noticably wrong. Girls start to lose skills they have previously aquired and their development slows down dramatically or grinds to a halt.

Many girls with Rett Syndrome lose the ability to talk, walk and feed themselves - if they ever gained that skill. Many will suffer from epilepsy, scoliosis (curving of the spine), will require a feeding tube and are more prone to illnesses such as pneumonia. Most girls will have very little purposeful hand movement and in most cases, can only communicate using their eyes. Essentially they become locked in their own bodies.

It has been proven on many occasions that girls with Rett Syndrome are intellegent, but they are often mistaken for having severe learning difficulties due to the fact that they can't communicate.

Please, please help us fund research to help set our girls free.
