SPITFIRE SCRAMBLE 2015

--------------------

SCRAMBLE, SCRAMBLE, SCRAMBLE.

Spitfire Scramble 2015 is London's only 24 hour relay run.  The race started at noon on Saturday 15th August and ended at noon on Sunday.  It was ran over a 5.9 mile course which is off road, multi-terrain and flat.  2014 was the first year this event was staged, 240 runners took part.  The venue for this event was at Hornchurch Country Park, on the former site of RAF Hornchurch, South of Hornchurch in the London Borough of Havering, East London.

600 Squadron was based at RAF Hornchurch in 1939,1940, and later at RAF Manston in Kent, a satellite station of RAF Hornchurch. As 2015 is the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, it would seem very fitting indeed that the Squadron should mark this occasion by returning to RAF Hornchurch after 75 years and take part in the Spitfire Scramble 24 hour relay run.

600 (City of London) Squadron took part in this event for the following reasons: -

  • To return to RAF Hornchurch in the 75th Anniversary year of the of the Battle of Britain.
  • It will provide a fantastic development opportunity: test of leadership, teamwork, courage and stamina.
  • To raise some pennies for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund (RAFBF), the RAF's leading welfare charity (www.rafbf.org)
  • BUT ABOVE ALL to show that 600 Squadron know how to have a good time!
