Around the World in 80 Clays
A third of the way around the earth, from Europe to Mongolia via a plethora of countries most people haven't heard of in a car that has an engine with no bigger than 1 litre. Starting from England, Spain and Italy, the rally finishes in the Mongolian capital Ulaan Baatar around four weeks and a whole heap of adventure later.
This year Alasdair Bremner and David Binns will set forth on a 10000 mile journey taking them through Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the Mongolian steppe along some of the worst roads in the world. As Lecturers in Ceramics they know a lot about pots but not a lot about cars.
What happens between the start, the deserts, mountains, wilderness and bandits is anyone's guess. In a normal year just over half the teams make the finish line in one piece.
With a traditional kick wheel strapped to the roof of the car the team will throw some pots along the route and after the rally will auction a number of pieces made by David Binns that incorporate material gathered along the route. Making some of the most well travelled contemporary ceramics in history!
