Story

It seemed to make sense to us, the majority of animals at Wood Green Animal Shelters have overcome diversity, have struggled and most have had to face their fears. So that's what we're doing to raise some money for them!

Hi, we're Sharon and Anna, two ‘thirty somethings’ who are canoeing the river Nene in a dual Canadian canoe for 91 miles. The journey will take us from Northampton to the Wash.

We’re giving ourselves a week to complete the actual mileage starting June 2011. We’re in training now! You can see some videos on the FaceBook page too http://www.facebook.com/pages/Anna-and-Sharons-charity-canoe-challenge/145340725492060?v=wall#!/event.php?eid=144116262279095&index=1

So far, we've got no experience, no equipment. We will complete this challenge!

Our training started at the end of the summer and will continue right through the winter and at the end, we’ll be ready for the challenge which will see us navigating the Nene for 91 miles; some of which is tidal.

The aim of raising our target is to contribute towards the costs of updating the oldest kennels at Wood Green, and to the new vet facility.

Wood Green Animal Shelters was founded in 1924 to help alleviate the problem of abandoned and injured animals on the streets of London after the First World War. Since then the shelters have grown and the reasons for animals coming into the Shelters have changed quite dramatically. Particularly in the last year with more and more pet owners feeling the strain of the recession.

We are very grateful for all of the support we receive especially during these difficult times.

The story so far ……..

We started by borrowing some single canoes whilst trying to find a Canadian canoe, some dry suits (just in case) and we had a few practice sessions. Our arms were just so weak!!

Then we got lucky and got a fantastic dual canoe (see some of the pictures here and on facebook). If you ever need a canoe go to Thame Canoes and ask for John!

Wish us luck and THANK YOU for any donations that you can offer the animals at Wood Green Animal Shelters.

Update from 7th November - sheep rescue! On the river we saw a ewe literally with only her head above the water. It took ages in the freezing water to get her back safely onto dry land. When we found the farmer we were told she is in lamb; with twins!
