Story

The A.M. Qattan Foundation launched the Gaza Music School (GMS) in Gaza City on 1 July 2008 as part of its vision to achieve sustainable development in the cultural sector. The project was co-financed by the Swedish Agency for International Development (SIDA).

On 5 October 2008, the GMS opened its doors to the first class of 31 boys and girls, in Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood, providing the first-ever long-term music education programme in the Gaza Strip.

However, a few months after the launch, the Israeli invasion of Gaza nearly brought this ambitious project to an end, as Israeli shells hit and destroyed the school premises on 14 January 2009. Luckily, the building was empty of people at the time but the shelling caused extensive physical damage.

Despite this setback, the Foundation was able to re-launch the GMS a few months later and to develop its resources, consolidate its administrative and academic staff, and build a network of important partnerships locally and internationally. This has enabled the School to expand and continue to provide an excellent level of service.

On 1 April 2012, the Foundation handed control of the GMS to the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music. By then the number of enrolled students had reached 125, all participating in an integrated educational programme on nine instruments: oud, qanun, piano, violin, guitar, trumpet, cello, flute, and percussion, under the supervision of an expert academic and administrative team of 15, and equipped with the necessary educational resources.

A donation of:

$1,500 would cover the cost of a students annual school fee.

$1,500 would allow the school to purchase a Qanoun.

$800 would allow the school to purchase a Cello.

$700 would allow the school to purchase an Oud.

$650 would allow the school to purchase a Flute.

$250 would allow the school to purchase a Violin.

The AM Qattan Foundation would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to all of its partners for their continued support of this pioneering project. Learn more about The Gaza Music School.
