The story of the ride - why only my left arm hurt after the ride:
I slept in, so I only just made the start area for 8:30, when the rest of HP/HPE were departing, then while in the queue for the start, puncture - from glass - went through the start timing, then walked back to the mechanics, new inner tube (free - thank you very much to cycle republic for the work) and on my way at 9:10. Caught up with the HPE people who were in the start queue at the same time by 20 miles, by which time my adrenaline kick from being sooo late had worn off. Just after the 35 mile water stop, on a descent, there was an accident that was being dealt with, but with a car parked behind and in front, both blocking the left of the road on a blind right hand bend and I could see the potential for further accidents, if others behind me were not warned. So I walked a few years back up the road so I could see the top and started to warn all road users to slow down on the approach. After about 20 minutes, an ambulance fast response on motorbike had arrived and the cars had been moved to the side of the road. Another 5 minutes and my arm was starting to feel sore from slowing all the cyclists down and so after getting another cyclist who was waiting to take over I headed off to the finish.
My Strava time was 4:05:20 total moving - which also included some of the waiting at the accident waving my arm around (link to Stava segment:

The next morning my arm was the only bit of me that was aching - all for a good deed, plus 18 extra miles getting to and from the ride.
