We support communities in Sri Lanka to offer families a route out of poverty

Story

Ocean Stars Trust was created as a personal response to the Boxing Day Tsunami and has been helping rebuild  shattered lives in Sri Lanka since its inception in 2005. Not only have these people been affected by natural disaster they have also had to endure decades of armed conflict that came to an abrupt end last year.

Ocean Stars is a small charity that connects directly with the people and their needs by supporting small community projects, nursery and infant schools and sponsorship of children and teachers.  Ocean Stars presently supports 13 nurseries with a further 19 applying for support.

This summer, Calum Oliver, an employee at ACCA and his wife Helen visited some of the projects in the East of the country and had the opportunity to work in some of the schools and visit some of the sponsored children and families.  For Helen this was her second visit to this area and she was able to witness first hand the difference a £10 monthly contribution makes to those families receiving sponsorship.

As resources are in short supply there is always a need to provide specific items for specific projects; one nursery asked for a whiteboard, another for playground equipment. Ocean Stars has also provided school uniforms for children so all attending are equal. Much is still needed including a chair for every child and tables for the children to work on.

To support this cause a number of ACCA employees will be taking part in the 2010 Pedal for Scotland challenge.

This year there are two course - a 100 mile route being attempted by Stevie Dickson, Rob Walton, Zia Yaqub, Steve MacLeod and Michael McDonald and a 51 mile route being attempted by Marion Wilson, Calum Oliver, Stefan Ward, Iain Dickens,Katherine Lancaster, Lisa White,  Joe Thomas , Terry Nelson , Charul Scott , Dale Whitehead ,John Paul Gilmartin, and his son Caoilfhinn.

The team appreciate any contribution you can make and they realise this can help make a real difference.

Every penny raised by Ocean Stars goes to those who need it. Make a difference and pledge your support today. Thank you. For more information visit www.oceanstars.org.uk
