Hydro Active Women's Challenge - London 2007 · 16 September 2007 ·

ACLT is a charity committed to helping provide hope to patients living with blood cancer and other illnesses where a matched donor (stem cell, blood or organ) is required to save a life. Our work is driven by a belief that no one should die waiting for a donor to become available.

Story

Hello this is Dominique & Beverley De-Gale's Hydro Active fundraising Page.

On Saturday 16th September we will take part in our 4th 5km run in order to raise much needed funds on behalf of the African Caribbean leukaemia Trust (ACLT).

The ACLT raises awareness and encourages all races/communities to step forward as potential life savers by registering as bone marrow donors.

Our family set up the charity in 1996, 3 years after 8 year old Daniel De-Gale (Beverley's son, Dominique's brother) was diagnosed with Leukaemia and was told he urgently needed a bone marrow transplant to survive. The odds of finding him a match was 1 in 250,000 simply because he was Black and not enough Black people were registering as potential bone marrow donors. If Daniel was White British he would have had a 1 in 5 chance of finding a match simply because hundreds of thousands of White British people were (and continue to) registered.

In 1999 a match was found on Daniel's behalf. A wonderful African American born again christian by the name of Doreene Carney heard the call and registered, a short while later she was found to be our saviour. Daniel received his donated marrow on the 16th June and has NEVER looked back. Doreene is now family for life. Daniel is now 20 years of age and attending University in North London.

The numbers of Black potential donors in the UK has increased from just 550 in 1996 to approx. 21,000 in 2007. Matches are now being found but we still have a long way to go as sadly in 2007 matches are still not found for many patients of all ethnicities and so we continue to raise awareness and to host registration drives throughout the UK in the hope that we can find matches for patients of all ethnicities.
