My story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
UNISON Welfare supports members going through hard times - offering debt advice and support, financial assistance - more than 2000 grants provided every year - and contributes to or completely pay for members and their families to have much-needed holidays where this would otherwise be impossible due to their financial situation, particularly where this has been compounded by illness, bereavement, domestic violence, poor housing, etc. In my own branch, for example, a member was provided with emergency funds to replace necessary household goods after leaving a violent relationship.
The Bucket and Spade Appeal, which this walk is raising money for, assists members, particularly those with children, to have a family holiday in the UK. All the sponsorship money that is raised will go directly to the charity and none is used to subsidise the trip. All costs are met by the participants themselves or by UNISON's corporate sponsors.
As well as raising money for a good cause, I'm looking forward to the challenge, and improving my fitness as i prepare. I can walk about 8 miles max at the moment, so it's not at all impossible, but still requires some work to do, and hopefully to do it easily.

Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me online and off.
Followed this with 9 mile walks in the Chilterns and around the Capital Ring from Cockfosters. Was I prepared enough? Well last weekend I completed the 35 mile challenge. The first day was tough, but it got better, and I almost finished the third day with a spring in my step.
Nine miles walked last Saturday in the Lea Valley -inner city loveliness- and 10 miles in the Chilterns planned next. My practice runs are finally happening after a slow start.
