Peter Kenneth Roberts-Wray, aged 80, died peacefully in Bognor Regis, on Thursday, 16 December, 2010.
Born 14 August, 1930, in Carshalton, Surrey to Joan and Kenneth. Educated at The New Beacon and Tonbridge School, he followed his father and elder brother to Merton College, Oxford, where he studied law and rowed for college and university.
He lived in Surrey, Southampton, and the Lake District, before settling in Felpham. He dabbled with careers in law and at Shell, but stuck to his passion for teaching for most of his career. He taught at various Prep Schools, including Westbourne House and Northcliffe; successfully relocating the school to Nursling near Southampton with his long-time friend, Mike Copeman, who died only two years ago. His vibrant zest for life and great sense of humour are qualities that made him stand out as a gifted Headmaster, earning him his election to Vice Chairman of the IAPS in 1977 (Independent Preparatory Schools Association). Peter was a people person, who made time for others, which earned him the respect of all who knew him, family, friends, colleagues and pupils alike.
Another of his great passions in life was being in the mountains. He loved climbing, walking and above all scrambling over them. Armed with a pocketful of Mars bars and a spare shirt, he conquered peaks across the UK and Europe. He particularly adored Norway. He was also an avid music lover; singing in and leading choirs, listening to the classics with rapt intent. He was able to enjoy this pleasure right until his sad demise.
He was no stranger to illness and overcome all obstacles with great strength of character, but his recent struggle with dementia was a cruel end to a brilliant mind. He has been wonderfully cared for by Pam and others including Lyn and the carers from the Prestige nursing agency for which his family are eternally grateful.
