This year, a team of unfit, deskbound, construction professionals will attempt a challenge in the name of charity- helping Everyman, one of Asda's charity partners, to raise funds for the work they do, to help eradicate prostate and testicular cancers.  The team comprises of colleagues from Asda, Davis Langdon, Harris Construction Management, Hydrock and Tate Consulting.

Our team is braving chaffing, exhaustion, heatstroke, and more chaffing, to complete the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge.  Far from being a stroll through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales (it is that, but...), we will be trekking 25 miles, up and down the 3 highest mountains in Yorkshire, and it must be completed within 12 hours.

This would be difficult even in the milder temperatures of Spring or Autumn, however- we don't do things by half.  We will be walking in the glaring summer sun, on Friday June 10th 2011.  Expect hankies on heads, and cricket levels of sun block on noses, cheeks, and lips.

This alone should be enough to inspire you to donate huge sums of money, but if you need any more motivation read below.  There are just some of the things Everyman do with the funds that we are helping them raise.

"The money raised by the Everyman campaign funds many areas of valuable research into more effective ways of treating prostate and testicular cancer.

These include:

  • Developing new drugs to treat prostate cancer and improve patient survival of this disease.
  • Further refining intensity modulated radiotherapy, which delivers the treatment more precisely to prostate cancer cells, improving cure rates by allowing higher doses to be used with no increase in side-effects
  • Developing a more accurate screening test for prostate cancer, and further establishing the benefits of active surveillance in treating men with prostate cancer to avoid unnecessary treatment for men without the aggressive disease.
  • Developing biomarkers to predict whether a testicular cancer patient is likely to relapse through microscopic and currently undetectable spread of the tumour.
