We empower the world's poorest communities to break them out of the cyle of poverty.

Story

Assallamalaikum and Jazak'ALLAH khair/ Thank you for visiting our page.

This page has been set up to raise awareness and raise funds for various projects being held in Mafia Island http://mafia-island-tanzania.gold.ac.uk/ , which lies off the coast of Southern Tanzania.

Mafia Island is one of the least developed parts of Tanzania.  The Island has a population of 45,000 and consists of one main Island and eight mini Islands.  People are facing a severe shortage of safe drinking water for local use and there are only 3 wells for this population of 45.000.  Not having simple and safe drinking water has caused dreadful deprivation for the local community to the extent of affecting their daily economic activities.  The Island has dire medical facilities and most of the medical problems found in an assessment by Islamic Help were water related (Cholera, diarrhoea, ringworm etc).

Islamic Help through their investigations have found that most of the water wells and storage reservations presently on the Island are open tanked are therefore very often infected by dead animals or contaminated by use of infectious people.  It is proposed that this well project will include a hand-pump facility, thus avoiding the above problems.

Another problem faced on the Island is malaria and the solution to this is to provide the community with simple mosquito nets which cost approx £2 each.  The troubles faced by this Island are made worse by the fact that it has very poor medical facilities with an additional lack of basic drugs such as painkillers and dehydration salts, both 'Prevention' and cure are ruled out, often proving fatal.

Other problems that are present are very poor educational facilities.  There is no secondary education available at all and no one is educated enough to teach at that level.

They have a number of Madrassas which are catering quite well for the spiritual needs of the students but these too lack the basic facilities.

Myself and sister Parveen are hoping to travel with Islamic Help to Mafia Island in December to help in some of these worthwhile and life saving projects.  The main aim of course is to raise much needed funds to provide safe and clean water for this community.

Islamic help are a multi-faith charity and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) who help people of all beliefs in the undeveloped World

The project with its participants will be building much needed wells, delivering mosquito nets and textbooks, teaching orphans and trying to help thousands of people who live on an Island that seems like paradise but in reality is full of poverty.

Please please support this worthwhile project and help make the lives of the people of this Island safer and better.  Water is something we all take for granted but  it is a source of salvation for these brothers and sisters.

Please remember this is also a form of Sadqah Jarriyah (ongoing charity) for yourself after you leave this earth.  Everytime the Well is utilised you will continue to reap the rewards of your generosity.

Jazak'ALLAH khair Thank you very much for taking the time to read.

Walaikum'assallam
