Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page! That means you're going to donate money to a very important project, and help motivate me to run 10 miles!

Now, those of you who know me, will know that I am always late - travelling at Abi speed. Typically, I have been somewhat slow in starting to raise money for the Great South Run, which is in 17 days.

So, please help me make up time by donating money to this page, so that by the time I cross the start line, I am some way to reaching my target of £300!

I have been training hard these last few months, pounding the streets in the hope that whether I run at Abi speed or olympic speed, I make it through the 10 miles, and most importantly, raise money for Rethink's Advice and Information Service - which is vital to anyone who is affected by severe mental illness. Read more below to find out why your money is so important - and why I'll be heaving my sorry self 10 miles around Portsmouth on a Sunday morning...
              ..............................................................................................................................................................................

Rethink's National Information & Advice Service (NIAS) is a unique service which fills a major gap in the services available to help people experiencing severe mental illness, their families and carers.. We are the only national service in the UK providing expert practical advice and casework support on a wide range of mental health issues. The NIAS respond to around 10,000 enquiries per year. Many callers are desperate for help, having contacted many other organisations without finding the help they need. Our advice staff can provide advice on a range of areas including medication issues, access to care, welfare benefits, debt, human rights and legal issues.

Our service is very different from other mental health helplines which focus on providing emotional support. By contrast, 60% of the NIAS’s work involves the provision of specialist advice and long-term casework. Some of our casework can lead to investigations by the Parliamentary & Health Service Ombudsman. Such investigations can bring about recommendations for improvements in care standards which can have a far-reaching impact for other people within the mental health system.

We also assist bereaved families to prepare for inquest hearings. Sadly much of our casework is related to the death of someone whilst under the care of mental health services. We believe that families should be able to find out why their loved one died and be supported in bringing to light any deficiencies of care. This work, which is unique to the NIAS, can result in significant improvements in the quality of care offered to all users of mental health services and their families.
