Want to run miles when you hear the word 'charity'? My answer is yes and that is just what i will be doing! In February 2012, I will be running a marathon IN THE DESERT, to raise money for a dramatherapy project we are planning in the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria.
PROJECT:
This February I will be part of a large team of drama and movement therapists who will be embarking on a research project taking place at the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria. The ten day research project will look at how to apply drama and movement therapy within three specific institutions at the refugee camps; the landmine victim’s centre, the prison and the special needs schools. What we hope to accomplish is a contextualisation of the organization of these three institutions along with the Saharawi culture. We are confident that this project will then path the way for Olive Branch Theatre and the charity Sandblast to return in the future to deliver training and therapeutic projects which can be effective.
The Saharawi Refugees are the forgotten people of the Western Sahara who have been living in exile in the harsh Algerian desert since 1975. For the past three decades, extremely precarious conditions, lack of medical care and absence of understanding about disability, have created a condition of critical distress among the most vulnerable people in the refugees in the camps. With your generous pledge we aim to pursue an approach dedicated to improving the lives of these vulnerable Saharawi people.
For more information about the Saharawi plight please watch the attached video of the theatre projects run by Olive Branch Theatre and check out Sandblast's website. For more information on drama and movement therapy see the Sesame institute website.
