The Challenge

In November this year I am one of 33 Lloyds Banking Group colleagues to have been given the challenge to cycle 500km from the Pacific to Caribbean Coast across Costa Rica to raise £140,000 for the Live Well Campaign, funding the first UK wide dementia carers’ programme and I have been chosen to complete this.

 

This tough 500km cycle challenge will see us cross the entire country from the Pacific Coast to the Caribbean Coast in just seven days. The ride will take us through the stunning scenery of this tropical country, giving this ride a unique and breathtaking backdrop. This includes traveling over all gravel and dirt tracks and an 18km ascent towards the foothills of the Santa Maria Volcano.

Why We're Doing This

One in three people over the age of 65 will develop dementia - robbing them of their memories and lives. Every year another 100,000 people develop the condition and there is no cure.

Dementia is the umbrella term for a number of diseases that affect the brain, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common of these but there are many others. People live for an average of nine years from a diagnosis of dementia. During this time, two thirds of people with dementia are cared for in their own homes by a family carer. A husband, wife, son or daughter – someone who has had no training or support for the role in which they find themselves.

There is no formal programme currently available for carers of people with dementia. And that’s where Lloyds Banking Group will be able to make a huge difference.

With your support Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland will be able to launch the first UK wide dementia carers programme, giving 9,000 carers the information and skills they need to support their loved one to live well with dementia.

Over the next coming months I will personally be making 100’s of cupcakes and novelty cakes for sale and also completing many personal challenges to raise my £4,000.00 donation and complete the challenge, if you see me about please show some support by digging deep (and scoffing your face) in support of this life-changing cause and together we can make a difference!
