Toynbee Hall works alongside people facing poverty and injustice to build a fairer and happier East London. Based in the East End of London since 1884, we aim to tackle unfairness and ensure everyone has an equal chance to thrive. You can donate at https://www.toynbeehall.org.uk/donate/

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am cycling the London to Brighton Night Ride in July to raise funds for the Toynbee Hall Free Legal Advice Centre.

Toynbee Hall’s Free Legal Advice Centre, commonly called FLAC, was founded in 1898 and is the oldest surviving Free Legal Advice Centre in the world. I am a supervisor and adviser at the Centre, providing assistance on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

The Centre provides advice on employment issues, debt and consumer problems, housing issues for tenants (both social and private), immigration advice, civil litgation, contractual disputes, family law, and an incredible range of problems that people face day-to-day.

Each year the Centre helps over 5,000 people who cannot afford legal help, and that number is increasing. It is a volunteer-run advice service, and provides free quality assured legal advice. The volunteers are a mix of barristers, solicitors, trainee solicitors and law students. However, the Centre still needs funds for the resources to run.

The Centre does not receive government funding, something the clients do not expect. It relies upon donations, from individuals to corporate funding. The money raised on this cycle will help provide the Centre with resources, maybe enough to help provide another advice session - one to replace the welfare law session that closed a couple of years ago, or a further women's only session each month.

The target is set at £250, but this is a minimum, and it would be really great to raise a lot more than that. Please give as much as you can; the Government expects pro bono advice to pick up the slack left behind by the legal aid cuts, but we cannot do it without financial assistance.

Many thanks,

Adam
