Dear Sponsor,
Thank you for coming to my JustGiving page for the London Marathon in April 2010.
I hit 50 years old, just 9 days before the London Marathon. This will be my first long distance run having plodded around the Bath Half a few times in varying degrees of pain.
I'm running on behalf of Lepra Health in Action http://www.leprahealthinaction.org/. There are about 3 million people in the world currently living with permanent disability due to leprosy. Yet it is a completely curable disease providing it's caught early enough.
LEPRA Health in Action works in some of the most deprived areas around the world, covering nine countries and a population of approximately 300 million. They work with world's poorest people - not only with leprosy but with other diseases of poverty including tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, malaria and filariasis.
I had the opportunity to work in India as a medical student, then 2 years in Zimbabwe as a Senior Registrar. I currently visit Uganda to teach postgraduate doctors. I also spent 3 years in a lab in the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine working on TB vaccine design.
I feel passionate about supporting this sort of work in poorer countries. Leprosy and TB are eminently treatable. Other diseases of poverty are controlable. Your support will help provide a step towards this.
