About The Charity

  • KCH Limb Reconstruction Trust give support medically, physically, psychologically and socially to patients undergoing limb reconstruction treatment like myself. The work that the trust and the staff at Kings College Hospital put in is invaluable in increasing awareness about disability and to change attitudes to it.

They are the only charity that caters for the specialist needs of limb reconstruction patients and I would like to take the chance to say a big thank you for all their hard work!

About My Event

I will be swimming 2000 meters front crawl in Dover Harbour in my Taylor Spatial frame in 2011 this was originaly supposed to be at Dover Regatta but they have changed the swim to 1500 meters. So I will now do the 2000 meters with Ashford Tri Club so I have witnesses. I still plan on doing Dover Regatta on the 3rd July, it starts at 2pm and if anyone wants to come allong to support me or join in please do.

So please dig deep and donate now.

Ade's Story

In February 2003 I had a snowboarding accident, resulting in a spiral fracture and after my local hospital could do no more for me, I was then transferred to Kings College Hospital where in 2005 I had an operation to fit my first external frame an Ilizarov. These frames are used to lengthen limbs, keep fractures in line, stimulate growth, correct congenital defects, stump lengthening for amputees and there are many more applications!

In 2006 we decided that the Ilizarov frame wasn't working so used another external fixator, a Taylor Spatial frame but again no success, so in 2007 I had a stacked Taylor Spatial frame fitted and this time it seemed to work and it was removed in February 2009. I spent 3 weeks on crutches, another 2 weeks with just one crutch then for the first time in over 3 and a half years I was walking unsupported by crutches, a frame or both and it felt a little strange.

By June 2009 things had progressed steadily with my recovery, I had gotten involved with Ashford Tri Club my local triathlon club and I entered my first triathlon a novice event. This was perfect as the area that I struggled with was the running, I could only jog slightly faster than walking pace but the run section was only a mile so was perfect for me and I was very happy to come in 7th place, especially after having been through so much over the previous six and quarter years. In July I entered my first full distance, it was a sprint triathlon and for the first time the last stage of the three disciplines, the run didn't feel as tough and when I was coming up to the finish line it just felt like I was back, it wasn't quick or easy but I felt like I was back!

Unfortunately on the 13 August 2009 while on the way to an Orthotics appointment at my local hospital the leg snapped on the original break site. I had decided to cycle to my appointment on my old bike which I used for getting around, I was on the cycle path and was just slowing to cross at a crossing when the chain locked, my foot slipped off the pedal, the toe of the trainer caught a spoke and the rest as you say is history. I had a grade 3 compound fracture, I was taken first to my local hospital where they operated to clean the leg out then the following day was transferred to Kings College Hospital where I had my 4th frame put on, another Taylor Spatial frame.

In June 2010 after more problems with my leg I had the frame extended with a 5th frame and they also found a bone infection which put me out of action for most of the rest of the year! So have had to started a new in 2011. I am updating this story while in hospital having my 3rd bone graft but have atleast managed to get a month of swimming in and hope to get back into training in March! Fingers crossed!!!
