Story

Ten years ago I set off to cross the French Alps on my bicycle with four other likely lads to raise cash for 'The Catherine Lewis Center' and to support the worldwide battle against cancer.

Before we left we were to meet personally with a Doctor Goldman of the Hammersmith Hospital. When we tipped up the Catherine Lewis Center was a building site and we were barked at by burly builders as we walked onto the site in our very gay looking lycra. Then a very posh voice boomed from the door of a portacabin...."I'll have you know these boys are here to see me!" We sat with him that day and were so in awe of his mission we believed that maybe we could raise a million pounds if we were to ride for ten years.

So this year I went back to see Dr. Goldman with that same group of lads and a couple of extras, I shook hands with him once more then turned the pedal and rode from Hammersmith to Portsmouth, took the ferry to Le Havre, rode across Normandy, the Northern Loiret, the exposed winds and rains of Burgundy, gnarly Le penn France to Switzerland and Geneva. By the time we hit Cannes we'd have covered one thousand three hundred miles of terrain in fourteen days of riding.

In Geneva, our official start, I met with 'The Fireflies Ride 2010' and another 70 riders joined in. The Alps were cruel this year, beating us back with suicidal weather in some of the highest places on long grinding days of distance and dynamic changes in altitude. The equation with why we ride was as clear as ever, everyone suffered like dogs, everyone got it and there wasn't a bad egg amongst us and we made it once again to the riches of Cannes.

So now ten years on we HAVE raised over one million pounds and we can hardly believe it, what an achievement! Without your donations our efforts would be futile so please support us again and again. Many more sufferers of cancer are going home from hospital rather than saying goodbye to their children. One of them was actually on our ride this year, 'Lucky to be here John' we call him.

Thank you,
