Story

Dear All,

Thanks for visiting this page and I hope this message finds you well.

In March 2010 I will be setting off on a bicycle ride from Cape Town to Istanbul. I will be cycling 16,000 km, unsupported, through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. I aim to cover an average of 100km a day and will be camping most nights. On route I will cross the Serengeti Plains, Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains, and the Sudanese Sahara, before hopefully reaching Istanbul by Christmas.

The trip presents some daunting challenges: keeping both myself and my bike in good working order and capable of completing the journey, cycling in extreme heat, and climbing some steep hills on a fully loaded bike, to name but a few. Nonetheless I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully with some help from people along the way and a slice of luck I’ll make it to Addis.

I’m doing the trip to raise money for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust. The charity funds brain tumour research and offers support to patients and their families. The work the charity undertakes is so important and it requires continued support to build on the great progress it has already made. As some of you may know, my father died of a brain tumour when I was younger and so the cause is particularly important to me. Please have a look at the charity’s website if you have a moment: http://braintumourtrust.co.uk/

I aim to raise as much as possible, and any donations for this great cause will make a real difference, so please give anything you can spare. I am funding the trip myself so all donations will go directly to the charity. Thanks again for taking the time to read this and for any contribution you choose to make. If you wish to follow the journey, from March, please visit: http://africa-cycle.blogspot.com/

Yours,

Rob
