Story

Please help us raise money for the African Drought - 3 peaks challenge

The worst drought in 60 years which has hit the Horn of Africa, has turned into a humanitarian disaster. 12 million people are facing a hunger crisis in Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya; Sudan and Uganda are also at risk. Nearly 100 children die each day of starvation and diseases in Somalia alone. The UN has announced that $2.5 billion is needed to provide urgent food aid to the region. The EU has also highlighted a greater support to humanitarian missions in Africa.

The food security crisis in the Horn of Africa – including the officially declared famine in two regions of southern Somalia – has already been called the worst humanitarian crisis of 2011 by Antonio Guterres, head of the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, and the most severe food crisis in the world today.

To support the cause, a group of HSBC staff will embark on the Three Peaks Challenge through 9th - 11th September 2011 in order to raise as much money as possible to help provide basic food and medical treatment for thousands. The challenge involves us taking on the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales - the target is to complete this in 24 hours! Over a distance of 40km, we aim to cover nearly 3000m of ascent and descent.
