Story
hi all,
the simple truth behind this campaign is that some months ago I slept on the streets of London for two days to experience homelessness. yes I slept in a sleeping bag and queued up at the food drives like the rest of the homeless people.
I slept in alley way and felt almost sorry for how I looked and how I smelt. it was undignified way to live as a human being, I couldn't go to the toilet at night as most places were shut and couldn't shower until i returned home.
it made me look at the homelessness issue in a completely different light there after so I would try and go weekly to charring cross and help 'who is hussain' a non profit organisation setup to change the way we look at the world. every Saturday they would have a food drive and offer free haircuts and dental checks to homeless folk of central london.
over time I got to know many of these souls by name and helped them however I could.
from sleeping on the streets of London I learnt so much about how I looked at the world and of course the issue of homelessness. i even wrote about my experience and explained how it brought me to tears when I got home.
when i got home, I had never looked at my shower in such a grateful way. the experience really broke me in a number of ways. i felt so grateful to have a room and a bed and a bathroom to use whenever I wanted.
God has given me so much but despite these blessings it doesn't feel right that we should forget about those who have been displaced in society.
hence, I signed upto the London to Brighton cycle ride.
our aim: to buy a mobile home so the homeless can have showers on a weekly basis and thus restore some dignity back into their lives.
many people on the streets of London have not had a shower for weeks and some haven't slept with a roof over their head for years.
