Hi I'm Aleks and I've decided to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania this coming June/July (2010) to raise money for Childrens Arthritis Trust (CAT).
CAT are a charity that helps support kids and teenagers that have arthritis which is a horrible condition to have at such a young age when they should be able to make the most of their bodies; running around, dancing, playing, etc there are many things that kids do which can become much harder if you have arthritis.
I've chosen this charity to support as my little sister was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis 4 years ago and I know things have become harder for her, especially as she loves Irish dancing. However she seems to have be coping with it fine, that or putting on a brave face, but I realise that things are likely to get harder for her as she gets older, especially her teenage years. So I figure the best way to help is by raising money for CAT who will I'm sure directly or indirectly help her and many others like her to deal with their condition. If you'd like to find out more about CAT click here
So why Kilimanjaro? Because it's a challenge and it won't be easy.
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895m above sea level and you pass through a myriad of climates as you climb is from rainforest at the bottom to snow at the peak. It is not usually the environment that halts people though but the altitude which can really take its toll even on the fittest of us.
I realise I will have to be training fairly hard in order to make it to the summit but the more I can raise through donations from people like yourself the reader, the more worthwhile it will make this.
So thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and now you know why I'm doing what I'm doing.
