"I fully understand how Thrive's work helps disabled people - I cannot live without my garden! It is the heart and soul of my life. It is full of trees, shrubs and thousands of dazzling flowers, flowers that smile at me as I bestow caresses and kisses on them. ... It is my belief that every flower enjoys the air that it breathes! Every blessed living moment I can find – I am in my garden." Brian Blessed, Actor About Thrive Thrive, founded in 1978, is a small national charity that uses gardening to change lives. We champion the benefits of gardening, carry out research and offer training and practical solutions so that anyone with a disability can take part in, benefit from and enjoy gardening. Gardening can help individuals accomplish many things. It can help rebuild a person’s strength after an accident or illness, and can provide a purposeful activity for someone coping with a difficult period in their life. Why I chose Thrive Thrive is a charity I have personally volunteered with and believe in immensely. Many of my friends and family will know that I am a huge fan of gardening and the outdoors and can spend many hours pottering in a greenhouse and tending to the plants! I enjoy it for all the therapeutic benefits it brings me and I am a big supporter of bringing that benefit to people with disabilities.
In particular I hope to raise money for the Thrive Battersea Garden Project which will help more disabled Londoners and in particular Thrive aim to:
• offer 16 to18 year olds, who have a range of special needs and are at risk of committing a crime or truanting, the opportunity to gain qualifications and improve their physical and psychological health.
• expand our programmes for stroke survivors and help more people in the early stages of dementia to use gardening to reconnect with friends and family.
• work in partnership with local business to offer disabled people an accessible work experience and training programme and the first steps towards employment.
This is how your money could help:
£30 could buy 100 bricks for our new building
£50 could buy a kitchen unit
£75 could buy a seat for the orangery
£150 could pay for one day with a horticultural therapist
Thank you for supporting my attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, starting 4th August, with Iona Leask, Caroline Betson and Amy Scamman. And thank you for supporting the work of Thrive.
