Barretstown provides a medically endorsed programme of arts, adventure and fun for children with cancer and other serious illnesses. Children aged 7-17 from all over Europe come to Barretstown to take part in our unique programmes, designed to help children recover from the emotional trauma of serious illness. They leave stronger, more independent and with a renewed sense of confidence in themselves.

My story

Hi,

On the 27^th September, I will be running 13.1 (long!) miles in the Run To The Beat London Half Marathon, in aid of Barretstown. Barretstown is a fantastic charity that has been set up for children with serious illness. It provides a specially-designed camp, for the children and their families, where they can go for a few days away from the worries of their normal lives, and enjoy immense amounts of fun, taking part in many different activities and adventures. In doing so they build new friendships, regain confidence and have “serious fun” (the Barretstown motto!).

I was privileged enough to volunteer at one of the camps in 2008, where I realised how much impact it does have on their lives , and for that reason I have decided to do something more and run. My training is under way, and going well so far, but I think it may get harder!
