Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds such as the smoke alarm, alarm clock, intruder alarms and baby monitors. These amazing dogs also help deaf people to leave loneliness behind by providing love, companionship and emotional support.

Story

Hello,

I am aiming to raise funds to support Hearing Dogs for Deaf People on the 22nd of September 2014 by becoming deaf for a day.

Hearing dogs are highly trained for the specific needs of the individual they live with; responding to sign language, alerting a deaf person to important sounds, alarms and danger signals. A hearing dog provides a deaf person with a companion that they can rely on; restoring confidence, security and independence as well as relieving the loneliness or isolation that hearing loss and deafness can sometimes bring. In short these dogs are life changing.

I plan to become deaf for the day to help raise funds and support an amazing charity and the work that they do. Until I began learning British Sign Language a few years ago I had very little comprehension of deaf culture and the issues deaf people deal with. I want to raise awareness at West Lothian College in Livingston, where I work as a Lecturer, and I am hopeful that I might gain some personal insights and a tiny glimpse of the difficulties deaf people face on a daily basis.

From when I wake up until I go to bed at night I will be fitted with special customised earplugs generously provided by the audiologist at Specsavers Hearing Centre in Livingston. I will attempt to have a normal working day and will keep a journal to share my experiences.

Recently John Barrowman became deaf for a day you can read his story here: http://blog.hearingdogs.org.uk/2014/07/john-barrowman-deaf-for-the-day-experience/
