When travelling Asia in 2008, Alex spent some time in Laos. Whilst there he witnessed the tireless efforts of MAG - The Mines Advisory Group - to help clear this, and other, former conflict zones of the dangerous munitions left behind. Earlier this year Alex told Simon all about their efforts not only in Laos but in Cambodia and Sri Lanka as well, and not long after that this opportunity to help support MAG came along.
MAG works to clear not just land mines but rocket propelled grenades, missiles, mortars, grenades, ammunition, small arms and light weapons, and many more types lethal weaponary discarded once conflict ends. Along with extensive projects to clear this deadly waste, MAG educates communities living in or near contaminated areas to try and help reduce the risks of them being maimed or even killed.
MAG helps rebuild communities damaged by war too, over 90% of MAGs staff are employed from the communities where they operate, and once cleared land is handed back to locals, this is vital as they often rely on this very land to survive.
To help support this daunting task Alex and Simon will be taking part in a charity bike ride in early 2011. The challenge starts in Saigon, Vietnam and ends over 440km later in Siem Riep, Cambodia. The ride takes 5 days and all the sponsorship money we raise will help fund MAG's life saving activities throughout the world.
The task ahead of MAG is enormous, all we ask from you is to sponsor us on this cycle challenge - whatever you can donate will be hugely appreciated. Remember, every mine, bomb and grenade cleared is one less accident waiting to happen. Please be generous.
Cheers,
Alex and Simon
Update: Unfortunately Simon has had to pull out of the event but has very generously giving his raised funds to my effort.
