We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

Thank you everybody for your kind support on the 16th Aug 2012 at 8am I summited Monte Rosa on the Italian / Swiss border. JIMMY MO RIP.xxx

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Please sponsor me to climb Monte Rosa, Switzerland’s highest mountain at 4634m for Cancer Research UK.

Cancer has affected a number of friends and relatives in my life over the years and continues to. Their suffering is tragic and the loss of good friends and loved ones can be extremely painful. Unfortately it still affects one in three of us at some point in our lives. If you could help me make even a small difference I would be extremely happy.

As a thank you and to inspire more donations to roll in. I will enter all the names of the sponsors in a hat after the climb and one lucky person will win a signed original oil mountain painting, painted by me.

I won the opportunity to Climb Monte Rosa through winning a photography competion run by the Guiding Company Mountain Tracks. And I want to make it clear that all expenses relating to the running of this trip have already been paid by Mountain Tracks and myself and 100% of your donation will go to Cancer Research UK.

This is not a Kilimanjaro style holiday trek under the auspices of giving to charity. I just want to turn a lucky win on my part into an even better win for other more unfortunate people.  I will go  this summer from the 11th-18th August. I do a lot of mountain climbing and it’s often seen as a pretty selfish sport. So this year, I thought I should approach it in a slightly different way.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Any amount no matter how small will be greatly appreciated. So please dig deep and donate now.

Some Statistics on how your money will help

 · A donation of £10 buys enough glass slides for a scientist to examine 300 tumour samples down a microscope. Studying tumour samples in minute detail could reveal new causes of cancer or new ways to treat it. A donation of just £1 buys 30, £2 buys 60, £4 buys 120 etc.

·Do you fancy helping us keep our scientists safe? Every day they use lots of different chemicals as part of their groundbreaking work and some of them can be harmful. Around £22.50 is enough to kit them out with a lab coat and a pair of safety specs to protect them.  Around £45 kits out two scientists

·Our Cancer Information Nurses never stop learning. That way they can answer as many questions as possible that people have about cancer. £40 buys a key textbook to keep them up-to-date on cancer medicine.

·Just like it takes the right temperature to bake the perfect cake, scientists also need to monitor the temperature of their experiments to make sure they work properly. £54 buys 22 thermometers to help them ‘feel the heat’ and ensure their groundbreaking research to beat cancer is as precise as possible.

·Our Cancer Information Nurses never stop learning. That way they can answer as many questions as possible about cancer. £90 enables one of our nurses to attend a study day to keep them up to speed on the latest advances in cancer medicine.

Some Information on the Climb itself

I chose Monte Rosa because after climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Austria, France and Germany it seemed an obvious next one to choose. (One day I hope to summit all the highest peaks in all the European countries.)

The Monterosa is the highest mountain in Switzerland and second only to Mont Blanc in the Alps. The week-long treck and climb will provide sufficient acclimatization and preparation time to make the Monte Rosa a realistic and achievable objective.

The highest peak on the mountain is the Dufourspitze, which is named in honor of Henri Dufour an army general and co-founder of the Red Cross. It is a long and challenging climb over 3 days that is normally approached via the Monte Rosa hut and the rocky West Ridge. The summit day is a 7 hour climb across snow and ice slopes of up to 40 degrees and with an elevation gain of almost 1900m.

Thank you.
