Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running the London Marathon for Mildmay Hospital this year. This is a charity which specialises in providing care and support to people living with HIV/AIDS in the UK, Eastern-Europe (Ukraine and Belarus) and Sub-Saharian Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Rwanda). Having met a group of teenagers born with HIV whilst doing an internship in Brazil 5 years ago, I started looking into the field of HIV and realised that, although great progress has been made in this field, it is still a massive issue in both the developed and developing world. Whenever you have some time, I would recommend you watch the series of 5 short documentaries 'love in the time of HIV' which gives a global view of the problem: http://www.aids2031.org/library/videos

50% of the money I raise will go to the UK project and 50% to the overseas projects. However, if you would like your donation to go to one specific project, please say so and I will make sure it goes where you want it to go!

In the UK, Mildmay runs the only hospital (nationwide as well as Europewide) providing support to long-term HIV patients facing cognitive impairment problems. This is a new area in HIV medicine as the emergence of new treatments means that, although patients live longer, they also face new challenges. In addition to dealing with patients who suffer from cognitive impairment, Mildmay supports patients who have been recently diagnosed or are switching to new HIV treatment therapies, including young adults who were born with HIV.

Overseas, Mildmay works to widen access to Antiretroviral therapies. In addition, Mildmay works with ministries of heath to help them improve their response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in their respective countries.

Finally, please note that, although Mildmay is a Christian charity, it treats all patients irrespective of religion, colour, nationality and sexual orientation. I have met their staff and am about to start volunteering with them in London - and can assure you that the environment is very inclusive! For any more information on Mildmay, please visit:
