Story

For those that don’t know, I am hugely fortunate, for my year abroad, to be going to Mozambique for 5 months in August 2011 and Honduras for 6 months in January 2012.  In Mozambique, I will be working in the capital, Maputo, for ACCORD, a newly created non-profit youth organization working in the field of national disaster relief, HIV/AIDS and Malaria. I will be teaching English, assisting office staff in developing fund raising and marketing strategies and providing support for HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns.      My project in Honduras has not yet been confirmed but it will hopefully be either with FUHNICER or with Integrar (Fundación Síndrome de Down Honduras).   FUHNICER is a non-political and non-profit organization that works for the less economically privileged children that are being treated for cancer in the “Hospital Escuela” in Tegucigalpa and other hospitals throughout the country. Integrar is a non-profit organization created for the parents of children & young people with Down's syndrome. It aims to promote the opening of opportunities for persons with Down syndrome throughout the country.   Mozambique is in southeastern Africa. The economy suffered serious setbacks when in 2000 and 2001 Mozambique was hit by floods, which affected about a quarter of the population and destroyed much of its infrastructure. Furthermore, in 2002 a severe drought hit many central and southern parts of the country, including previously flood-stricken areas. Poverty remains widespread, with more than 50% of Mozambicans living on less than $1 a day.  Honduras is a republic in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_America">Central America</a> with a population of almost eight million. Its capital is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tegucigalpa">Tegucigalpa</a>. Hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras in 1998, killing at least 5,000 people and devastating 70% of the country's crops. The damage was estimated at $3bn, setting development back by decades. Today, Honduran society is rife with economic inequality. Malnutrition, poor housing and infant diseases are widespread. Endemic poverty, chronic unemployment and the prospects offered by drug trafficking have contributed to a virulent crime wave conducted mainly by youth gangs known as "Maras".   However, in order to do this I need to raise £6,395!                         *Please buy me a virtual leaving drink!* Just imagine I’m holding a leaving party at the pub - wouldn't you want to buy me a leaving drink to send me on my way?
