My story

Thanks so much for taking the time to visit this page!! Here's an overview of what your donation will mean....

WHY WILDLIFE, AND WHY TODAY?

Who better to sum it up than David Shepherd himself:

"Since time immemorial, one species became extinct every century. Today, one becomes extinct every hour. Wildlife around the world is being decimated by an awesome onslaught of threats ranging from habitat destruction and hunting, to pollution. Another serious threat - wildlife crime - is worth a staggering US$8 billion annually, third only to the illegal trade in drugs and guns. People have slaughtered 98% of the world's black rhinos… wiped out more than half of Africa's elephants and three sub-species of tiger have disappeared forever. We need your help today - tomorrow will be too late."

HOW DOES THE CHARITY COMBAT THIS....

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation is an adaptable and flexible, non-bureaucratic organisation responding promptly to conservation threats by supporting trusted, reputable individuals and organisations operating in the field.

Lean on administration but generous on funding, David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation supports a range of innovative, vital and far-reaching projects throughout Africa and Asia, achieving real results for wildlife survival by:

§  Sending undercover agents into the field to investigate illegal wildlife crime, training and supplying anti-poaching patrols

§  Establishing nature reserves and other protected areas

§  Working with governments to establish conservation laws and regulations

§  Educating wildlife consumers about the plight of the animals they 'use'

§  Teaching young people about endangered wildlife through art and school projects

EXAMPLES OF SOME RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS…

§  Training and equipping every forest officer in India's Gir National Park, home to the last surviving Asiatic lions

§  Uncovering ivory cartels in Zambia, seizing thousands of pounds worth of ivory and arresting poachers

§  Reducing poaching in Russia, allowing Siberian tigers to increase from 100 to over 400 in the wild

§  Purchasing land next to one of South Africa's National Parks, home to the last 800 surviving mountain zebra, extending the park by over 200%

§  Active Conservation Awareness Programme: ' When the Buying Stops, The Killing Can Too', has reached over 40 million homes across Asia and with the support of film idol Jackie Chan has persuaded many to stop consuming wildlife

§  Funding undercover operations of Africa's first cross-border Task Force fighting wildlife smuggling

BACKGROUND TO THE CHARITY...

Beginning his career as an Aviation Artist the RAF flew David from Mukulla in Aden to Kenya in 1960, which proved a  turning point in his career when they commissioned his very first wildlife painting - a rhino on a runway – he never looked back.

It was at this time that he became a conservationist overnight when he came across 255 dead zebra at a poisoned waterhole in Tanzania.

Throughout his career he has therefore tried to do all he can to repay the enormous debt he feels he owes to the elephants, tigers and other animals that have given him so much success as an artist. ‘Tiger Fire’ (pictured behind David) was one of his first major fund-raising successes, raising £127,000 for Operation Tiger in 1973.

In 1984 he established the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation to channel his own conservation efforts to fund vital enforcement and community projects that continue to make a real difference to wildlife survival in its natural habitat. To date, through his tireless and passionate efforts and, thanks to the generosity of the Foundation’s dedicated supporters, including artists from around the world who support DSWF’s ‘Art for Survival’ programme, over £4.9 million has been given away directly in grants to keep key projects in Africa and Asia alive and operational - with an additional £1 million invested in important education and advocacy.
