Clydeside Action On Asbestos (CAA) is a registered charity which was
formed in 1984 to provide advice and assistance to those who suffer from
asbestos related disease and their families. CAA is the
foremost charity in the U.K. providing this service with 5 full-time workers and 3 volunteers. The group is funded by donations, lottery and
local authority. CAA aims to
campaign for and provide support to those who have been affected by
asbestos related disease.
As an oncologist caring for people with mesothelioma I see the devastation this disease brings - previously healthy man and women affected by an incurable illness because of events at work beyond their control, the risks of which they were usually unaware. The diagnosis brings serious financial as well as health implications for sufferers. CAA provides a
comprehensive welfare rights service, advising on benefit and
compensation entitlement and support groups around the country for those diagnosed with
mesothelioma and their families to help with the emotional impact of the disease. It actively campaigns
for amendments to the law and social policy to promote positive changes
for sufferers, which assist them in increasing their quality of life, provides specialist advice on claiming industrial injuries benefits
and state compensation as well as all other state benefits and
advises clients of their legal right to pursue a civil case for
compensation; as the majority of cases of asbestos disease continue to
be caused by negligence on behalf of their current or former employer. Every one I see with mesothelioma is put in contact with CAA.
They been actively involved in the Damages Scotland Act
1993, Social Security (Benefits) Act 1992, and Rights of Relatives (Damages)
(Mesothelioma) Act 2007 and were recently awarded the coveted Herald
Newspaper Campaigner of the Year Award for their work on the pleural
plaques compensation issue culminating in the introduction of the
Damages (Asbestos Related Conditions) (Scotland) Act.
