I am climbing Jebel Toubkal in September 2010 with a group of female colleagues from Centrica. Jebel Toubkal is a mountain peak in southwestern Morocco and, at 4,167 metres, it is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains in North Africa. The climb takes three days and will involve steep slopes (altitude with hot sun), two nights under canvas (I understand it gets very cold at night) and - possibly the biggest challenge for me - no showers or toilet facilities.
We are climbing to raise money for Camfed (Campaign for Female Education), a non-profit organisation dedicated to eradicating poverty in Africa through the education of girls and the empowerment of young women. In sub-Saharan Africa, 24 million girls can't afford to go to school and research shows that if you educate a girl she'll:
- Earn up to 25% more and reinvest 90% in her family;
- Be three times less likely to become HIV-positive;
- Have fewer, healthier children who are 40% more likely to live past the age of five.
