Story

Hi all,

Last year I was working in Uganda over Xmas. There are so many people in need out there and so instead of Xmas cards I am donating money to BHPH which support Hoima hospital. Below is some info that I wrote when I set up the page last year. Please give what you would not miss. The cards would last a month, this money can change lives. Thanks

I have set up a 'Just Giving' page for those people who want to opt out of some of the commercial xmas stuff. Instead of sending a multitude of xmas cards that will end up in the bin in a few weeks you may want to feel that your money has been useful. In the same way that you can do things like buy a donkey or goat for someone I thought for those of you who are interested you may like to donate some money to buy hospital equipment.

If you are reading my blog you will have an idea of the kind of situation I am working in. Just to give you a brief idea, at present we have no urine dip sticks, steroids, (to help the lungs of premature babies) magnesium sulphate, (a treatment for fitting women in pregnancy) and hydralazine (for controlling blood pressure). There is one blood pressure machine for the labour ward, postnatal ward and gyne ward (we had two but one has broken). I have no machine to measure oxygen levels, and if oxygen is needed on the ward we have to stop operating and use the machine from theatre.

I could go on.

I cant send you a pretty card saying that your money has helped buy six thermometers however I will try to update my blog to indicate what and how your money has been spent.

To give you a rough idea of prices of equipment I have converted these from the JMS website from Ugandan shillings to sterling-

Stethoscope £1.81

Sphygmomanometer £22.20

Thermometer £22.20

Oxygen concentrator £641.86

10 foley catheters £3.23

50 pairs of Sterile gloves £9.06

Speculum £13.30

100 canulas £13.32

Mosquito net £2.90
