We are cycling Coast to Coast this Easter to raise funds for Viagenco, a clinic out in Kenya where we will be spending 5 weeks this summer undertaking our medical elective.   Viagenco is a non-profit home health and palliative care agency, started in 2002, which serves a poor rural population. The area has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Kenya, affecting 33% of the population. Malarial infections, typhoid and amoebic dysentery are also prevalent.   Viagenco has developed a permanent, well-staffed outpatient clinic, a 12 bed in-patient facility, a home based palliative care program, and an HIV outreach program for testing and counseling. They also support the educational costs of over 130 orphaned children and connect them with caring families in the community. A large part of the population is not able to pay for medical services thus the clinic is essential. <a href="http://www.directrelief.org/Kenya/ViagencoComprehensiveCare.aspx">http://www.directrelief.org/Kenya/ViagencoComprehensiveCare.aspx</a>   The money we raise will go towards much needed medical supplies for the clinic, such as simple antibiotics which otherwise it cannot afford. It isn’t really about the cycle-ride (luckily because I’m useless on a bike) but hopefully we will be able to get enough supplies for the clinic for a number of months.   Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
