Don't we all love the idea of going home at the end of a hard day's work? Imagine what it must feel like having NO HOME TO GO TO! That's all very well you might think, homeless people are a familiar sight on the streets of London but not in a prosperous, surburban area like Kingston, surely it can't be too much of a problem? What might surprise you is that 550 people are made homeless in our borough every year!
Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness mission is to relieve the distress of homeless and potentially homeless people by finding appropriate accomodation for them and supporting vulnerable people in maintaining their tenancy and avoiding a 'revolving door' of homelessness. We have proudly served almost 5 thousand people since our inception in 1993.
I am going to attempt to fast for a week during Passion Week to raise money for KCAH as part of our Lenten campaign entitled 'Fast track out of the wilderness' remembering Jesus's desert experience and reflecting on the parallels in the lives of all homeless people. Please sponsor me!
Update at 9:15 pm on Palm Sunday. The first day of fasting is nearly over. Made entertaining by spending lunchtime helping to serve and wash up a meal for 120 at Christ Church New Malden. Despite all the food passing within inches of my mouth managed to resist it, even the chocolate gateau pudding! Keeping going on tea, coffee and beer!!
Day 4, 1:40 pm. Still going, still nothing to eat. I have now missed 11 out of a total of 21 meals so more than half-way! So far I have not conked out at work, fallen off my bike or crashed the car, even went and played squash as usual on Monday night. It's an interesting process, the human body must be designed to do this I suppose. I am hungry though!! Roll on Easter Sunday
Day 6, 3:30 pm. I was a bit blase about the fast till the last 24 hours, which have been pretty tough, particularly today. Went to see my in-laws yesterday including over 4 hours driving some in very heavy rain and traffic, then stayed overnight with my mother before coming back home this afternoon. The WORST was doing a big food shop this morning, feeling a bit faint and with a slight headache, and somewhat beyond hungry, traipsing round the market and Waitrose having to think about what everyone else was going to eat tonight and what WE WILL BE EATING TOMORROW - the end is nigh, we have missed 20 out of the 21 meals, roll on Easter Day!
