In Memory of Alison Cahill.

We are Andrew Marchant and Sarah Cahill – and we are taking part in the 2012 Macmillan 4x4 Challenge. Andrew has taken part in the event twice before, navigating for Bryan Moss, coming 3rd overall in 2010 and 10th in 2011. For Sarah it is going to be the first time taking part – will our relationship survive the heat of competition? But competing is not the main reason for our entry. It is a positive way for us to remember Sarah’s mum Alison, who was lost to cancer many years ago – and do something to help those finding themselves in a similar situation. Sarah has first hand experience of the invaluable support from Macmillan, and as such there cannot be a cause closer to our hearts. For Andrew this is a chance to remember the mother-in-law he never knew, and hope that she is looking down on us with approval…

We all know people whose lives have been dramatically altered by this dreadful disease. Macmillan are actively making life better for those affected – please help us to support them. Every penny you donate goes straight to Macmillan – we are responsible for all of our own costs, including entry, food, fuel and equipment.

The Mac 4x4 (mac4x4.co.uk) is a navigational and observational exercise, with stages set both on and off road. But this is no timed speed rally – we will be spending 3 days together in a Land Rover, attempting to answer clues based on what can be seen around us, while making sure at all times we are going the right way! The challenges thrown at us will be new and novel – we know only to expect the unexpected…

Our vehicle is a 1994 Discovery – over 140k miles on the clock but still going strong. It’s an automatic so Sarah can drive if need be, but we expect Andrew to do most of the driving. We plan to enjoy the event, to take a photo or two when the scenery demands it, and worry less about our leaderboard position. To avoid the “pleasures” of camping in March, we will be sleeping inside the vehicle, preparations for which are sure to keep Andrew busy right up until the night before we leave.

Please note you can track the event - at least 5 of our fellow competitors have GPS tracking, and as everyone stays within a couple of hours of each other, you will able to see where we are "live" during the event. Go to http://livetrack.skytag-gps.co.uk (NOTE: NO www) with Username: mac4x4 and Password: mac4x4.
