Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am running the Windermere Marathon on 20th May followed by the Great North Swim (in Windermere) on 24th June 2012. Having been moved by the plight of the founder of this charity at a recent fundraising charity ball (organised by Fiona Morris and her team), I felt compelled to compete in these events for this very worthy cause. Valued, an initiative of Comfort Rwanda are trying to make a difference to the lives of women and unborn babies in Eastern Congo, Africa in different ways including those outlined below:- a) In response to the rape crisis in Eastern Congo. Valued funds vital repair surgery for women who have been destroyed by rape. This includes hospital fees, ongoing medication and further support. Whilst some women are entitled to free care if they seek treatment within three years of rape, many women do not meet this criteria, for several reasons. They may need repeat treatment, they may have been raped in the conflict more than three years ago, or may not have sought treatment due to fear and lack of understanding. These women suffer terrible internal injuries, which, if untreated, can lead to death b) Valued is partnering with the Lake Kivu Christian Centre in Goma, Eastern Congo to build a 20 bed maternity extension! Their vision is to see the extension built by December 2012. Currently there are no facilities of this kind in the area. Women are unable to afford to deliver at hospital, and risk staying at home in unsafe conditions to deliver their babies. Should they run into complications during labour, they are unable to afford the £75.00 currently needed for a caesarean at a nearby hospital, contributing to the shocking mortality rates for mum and baby. The LKCC clinic will offer first rate care completely free of charge to women in Eastern Congo, giving their children the start in life that they deserve. website - <a href="http://www.valued.org.uk">www.valued.org.uk</a> Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
