As part of IBM's Centennial year and our commitment to supporting our local communities, I have decided to cycle to work from my home in Putney to IBM's HQ in Portsmouth. The total distance is 70 miles. I am raising money on behalf of Greenmead, a local school in Putney. The ride will take place on November 13th 2011. Greenmead Primary School for Children with Special Needs is a state school for children from ages 2--11 with severe physical and intellectual disabilities -- from those who need help with every aspect of life to those who are emerging readers. Children at Greenmead are encouraged to reach their full potential in a positive, caring and supportive environment. All the children enrolled require
specialist teaching and a range of therapies. Although it is located in West Putney, it attracts pupils from Westminster, Lambeth, Kensington & Chelsea, Richmond, Kingston and beyond. The families at Greenmead come from a range of economic backgrounds. Many of the families find it difficult to participate in fundraising events as their disabled child's needs are quite consuming and often prohibit them being left with a babysitter.
Friends of Greenmead (FoG) is a registered charity and aims to provide the pupils of Greenmead School with additional specialist equipment, resources and other educational activities not funded by the local authority. Funds raised have been spent on music therapy, specially-adapted play and IT equipment and extra therapy resources for the students -- including funding the employment of a therapy assistant to augment NHS therapy provision and make sure the children receive hands on help practicing basic mobility and fine motor skills on a regular basis.
