Story
About a year ago the idea to cycle the length of the county was suggested by Ian Burdekin to Rhys Evans, Andy O'Keeffe and Nick Beazley. We were all up for it straight away. We all had our individual reasons for wanting to do it. We all wanted to raise money for a good cause, and collectively as work colleagues and friends we liked the idea of a crazy adventure!! We had all been involved in a two day trip a few years earlier although sadly one member of this team, Jon, wouldn’t be able to join us this time as he has been battling brain tumours, so I think we are all doing this trip for him as well. We know he’ll be with us in spirit and want us to achieve it!
Unfortunately Nick has now had to pull out due to injury, and to focus on his other challenge of The London Marathon - good luck Nick!
So...Ian, Rhys and myself will be setting off to Lands End on Friday 11th May and then taking 12/13 days to cover 1,100 miles up to John O’Groats, (the longer, safer route) hopefully arriving on the 24th/25th May. It will be 80-100 miles each day with no rest days, so it will be a significant challenge, but one we are determined to achieve. We would love it if you were able to support CANCER RESEARCH by making a donation, it would mean a lot to us, giving us fantastic inspiration and make a real difference to people suffering from Cancer.
Many thanks from Team A.I.R (Andy, Ian, Rhys)
Andy O’Keeffe
Ever since I suffered from Cancer when I was younger, I vowed to do something ’big’ to raise money for Cancer Research to ensure I passed something back and help ensure others successfully battle such a horrible disease. So when my friend Ian said did I want to cycle Lands End to John O’Groats, I knew this was my chance and said yes straight away! It was only afterwards it sunk in that I was a complete novice and hadn’t cycled seriously since my teens! The last year has seen me on a road bike, in lycra, and training in my living room on a turbo trainer. I’m nowhere near being an expert, but really looking forward to the challenge with amazing support from my family as well as support and laughs from my fellow bike mates, Ian and Rhys.It would be great if you were able to support us too by making a donation. Many thanks!
Ian Burdekin
Having a challenge in life to aim for is really important , cycling the length of the UK will be a fantastic achievement for the three of us, however, it will never be as challenging as dealing with cancer . Having experienced family members struggling with cancer, I am keen that we achieve this ride safely and with some funding being made available for this important charity .
Rhys Evans
I’m always up for a challenge but when I found out that Ian Burdekin was going to cycle the length of Britain, it was just something I had to join him in. This is going to be the most challenging cycle ride I have ever completed and to do it raising money for this charity that is really important to me is going to make this a worthwhile, lifetime experience.
Support for the Trip
We will be supported on the trip by Rhys’ father in - law Stephen Barter who will be our support driver. We don’t under-estimate how hard this will be and critical to how we carry out this challenge well. Huge thanks to Stephen for giving up his time and helping with this incredible trip!
