2009 was a very sad year for all my family because our Mum became very ill. We first became aware she was not well when she found it difficult to hold her drink and became unstable on her feet. Then it became more serious as her legs would just give way and she would fall over. After several scans it was diagnosed that there was a problem with the alignment of her vertebrae in her neck. On 3 March she was given a bed in Margate Hospital whilst she was waiting for a bed to come vacant at King’s College Hospital London where she was going to have an operation on her neck. For three long weeks she lay worrying if she would ever be able to walk again. Three weeks of not being able to move for fear of causing more damage to the spinal cord. Then came the news we had all been waiting for. A bed had become vacant at Kings. We were all elated. My dad packed my Mum’s bags. We phoned around to all her family and friends to tell them the good news. Then came the bombshell. There was no ambulance to take her there. If we didn’t get my mum to King’s by midday the following day she would lose her slot. The ward manager did all she could to get a private ambulance with no success. We began to panic. Every door was closing. Then we got the break we had been waiting for. My sister-in-law had also been phoning around all the private ambulances and had managed to get a positive response from St. John’s Ambulance. They had a crew that were prepared to take her to King’s that night but by this time she was exhausted and so it was agreed to take her there the following morning. We will always be grateful to the volunteers of St. John’s Ambulance for taking my Mum to King's. For this reason I have chosen to support them, and especially the Ramsgate Branch, by trying to raise £1000 to buy a first response bike. On the 30th June 2010 I will be taking part in a sponsored bike ride from London to Paris. Every penny of donation will go directly to St. John’s Ambulance, Ramsgate to help them set up a Cycle Response Unit. The CRU will be able to respond quicker to emergencies where there is dense traffic, crowded areas or where there is difficult access for an ambulance.
