We raise awareness of AIDS through cricket to strengthen communities and fight disease

Story

Hi,

I am going to  on March 26th 2010 for 17 days to raise the awareness of HIV/AIDS through cricket!  I have been selected by Cricket Without Boundaries (CWB), as part of a small group to take on a project in .

The Cricket Without Boundaries Trust was established in April 2005 by founder-trustees Andy Hobbs, Chris Kangis and Ed Williams. It is a registered charity in the , number 1111316, operating under the name of Cricket Without Boundaries ("CWB").   CWB has three main goals: -

- To spread cricket through coaching children and teaching adults how to coach

- To link the sport to HIV/AIDS awareness and incorporate these messages into coaching sessions

 - To bring together and empower local communities through cricket

Working in partnership with the Cricket Associations in Kenya, the British High Commissions and the ICC, we will follow a simple, 3 stage, sports development structure to try to ensure some form of sustained development of the game: -

1 - Coach education

2 - Schools coaching

3 - Tournament

Our coach education takes the form of teaching the adults the basics of cricket through the ICC's Introduction to Cricket course (which includes coaching, umpiring and scoring) as well as for more developed coaches delivering the ICC's level 1 and 2 awards. We will try to link our coaching in with each National Cricket Association's existing development plans. In 2008 CWB signed a memorandum of understanding with Rwanda Cricket Association, committing to 5 years of support from CWB if the RCA meets it's own development goals.

HIV/AIDS IN

24.7m people in sub-Saharan have HIV

That’s 63% of the worlds HIV population

In 2006 2.8m adults and children became infected with HIV

2.1m AIDS deaths in sub-Saharan

That’s 72% of global deaths

These figures are astonishing and things must change to preserve the country's future.

In order for me to realise my goal of coaching in and spread the HIV/AIDS awareness message, I need to raise a minimum of £750 sponsorship.

About the charity

Cricket Without Boundaries is dedicated to helping, educating and developing local communities around the world through the spread and growth of cricket. Crucially, CWB also uses cricket as a tool in the fight against AIDS. CWB’s training sessions have at their heart discussion about the disease in terms of prevention, treatment and equality of treatment for those with and without the disease.
